Isla del Rey, 47*45,6 S / 66*01,1 W, 3 january 2010
We motored ca 5 miles upstream from Puerto Deseado to Isla del Rey.
There was a flood current of 4 to 5 knots and the wind was blowing 25 knots from the west.
Now at 16.00 we are on anchor with 80 meters of 10 mm chain out.
The wind is blowing very strong 35 to 40 knots from the north west.
Because of the wind and the waves it is now impossible to explore this island which is a natural park: The Reserva Natural de la Ria Deseado..
When we arrived we were welcomed by a group of black and white dolphins: called
Commerson’s dolphins. We see also a lot of the Magellanic penquins.
From the Patagonia Nautical Pilot:
“This is the place where the Dutch ship Hoorn, belonging to the expedition of Isaac Le Maire, burned down while being caulked on December 1615".
It would be interesting to read the ships journals of this voyage.
Does anybody know if they exist ??
Maybe in the library of the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam?
4 January 2010, at 02.30 hours.
We are keeping anchorwatch because we dragged a few hundred meters with the anchor and the wind is still quite strong. We change watches every two hours and hope the wind will slow down enough to give us more hours of sleep.
Yesterday evening there was a little seadog swimming around the boat with his little curious head tilted out of the water and looking very amazed at us. There were also these black and white dolphins.
12.00 hours
The wind died completely and we made a nice walk on the island,
See the photo’s of the wildlife we met there.
