The following has been published in Yachting World:

Dick Zaal, the designer, is well known as the designer of the Contest range of yachts. Grey-One has some most interesting features to make her a highly attractive short-handed racer or cruiser. Dick has kept the major working and sleeping area in the most stable part of the boat while he has used plastic domes to great effect over chart table and galley.

The designer comments: (written in approx. 1985)
When looking for a boat, with the idea to take part in long-distance races like OSTAR, TWOSTAR or AZAB, one finds that very little on today's market is really suitable. A stock boat has to be changed in many ways to fill only part of the bill, because there are still lots of unnessary or even undesirable characteristics on present day I.O.R. orientated cruiser racers which can't be changed with screwdriver and spanner.
Our answer is Grey-One, relatively inexpensive, but fast and easy to sail, suitable to accomodate one's family in comfort when not racing. We chose a light-weight hull, long and narrow on the waterline, easy to drive with a maximum speed.
The fin keel is fitted with a trim tab to reduce leeway, and this can act as a spare rudder as well.
Since spinnakering is often hard to do single-handed, a bigger mainsail is most effective, so we chose a fractional rig, however in a somewhat sturdy form than can be seen on modern I.O.R. racing yachts.
The interior has its working space central in the yacht near the cabin entrance, a feature which is of importance in case of seasickness or when very tired.
The steering position is in the cockpit, a vertical tiller is used to save as much working space as possible, while the helmsman finds excellent protection behind the extended coachroof.
Grey-One can be built of several materials, but we chose aluminium, keeping this unpainted above the waterline, to save money and maintenance- which gives Grey-One her name.
